And with some of the best York hotels found both in the heart of the city and in the outskirts, you can base yourself as close to the attractions as you wish. Out of Town
You will find many York hotels located out of town close to both York’s Designer Outlet and Monks Cross Shopping Centre. At Monks Cross you can enjoy a number of large high-street stores all located close together and with ample parking available. Choose from stores such as Boots, Next, River Island and Topshop, to name but a few. But if it is a bargain you’re after, then you might want to head to the Designer Outlet. Here you can discover all your favourite designer names, from Armani and Jaeger to Ted Baker and more, with all stores offering discounted prices and many special offers.
The Heart of the City
For a really varied shopping experience, head into the heart of York, as the city centre really does have it all. Enjoy all the usual big name stores, such as Marks and Spencer and Fenwick’s department store, as well as a number of unique gift stores and antique shops. Whether you are looking for some original fashion, something for the home or a lovely gift, you can find it all among the shops of The Shambles. These cute cobbled streets really give you a feeling of stepping back in time and they bring together some interesting retailers.
Markets
For some tasty treats, why not head to one of York’s bustling markets, which offer a selection of local and seasonal produce throughout the year? From regular farmers’ markets to more festive affairs in the winter, York’s retailers enjoy sharing their foods, crafts and produce with visitors.
Stop for Refreshments
If you find you need a break among all the retail therapy, why not head to the well-known Betty’s Café Tea Room? This historic building in St Helens Square has played host to the tea rooms since 1936 and is still owned by the Belmont family that originally opened them all those years ago. The stylish setting, both outside and inside, will take you back to another era and offer you a quintessentially British Afternoon Tea. .The tea rooms are also open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so if tea isn’t really your thing you can still experience Betty’s for yourself.
